Music as Part of Business Operations

Today, music is essential to modern business. Whether in cafés, restaurants, retail stores, beauty salons, fitness clubs, hotels, or offices, the right soundtrack shapes customer emotions, builds atmosphere, and elevates the overall brand experience.

However, using music lawfully often brings a wave of questions for business owners. How does music licensing actually work, and where do royalties go? What specific rules apply to different industries? Most importantly, how can businesses accurately budget for music compliance?

To help entrepreneurs navigate these issues in a simple and accessible way, the Play&Pay: Use Music Legally information campaign is being launched as part of the joint educational project United for IP by UANIPIO and the Ukrainian Agency for Copyright and Related Rights (UACRR).

Campaign Objectives

The initiative aims to:

  • demonstrate that the legal use of music in business is a simple, transparent, and predictable process;
  • dispel common myths about music licensing and royalty payments;
  • to promote a culture of ethical music consumption and robust respect for copyright and related rights in Ukraine.

Who Will Benefit from the Initiative?

The campaign is designed for businesses that:

  • use music for customers in venues, stores, offices, studios, or other spaces;
  • create atmosphere and emotional connections with their brand through music;
  • use music as part of their services, customer experience, or commercial activities.

What Does the Campaign Include?

The campaign will feature a series of informational materials, online and offline events, expert sessions, and practical guidance for business representatives.

Participants will be able to:

  • gain a better understanding of music licensing and royalty payment mechanisms;
  • learn about the approximate costs of using music in their business;
  • receive practical explanations and recommendations;
  • explore real-life cases and examples from various industries.
